A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the year before. This project was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its role in national works. They were built at an accelerated pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
