England and Welsh Pitted Together for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was conducted by sporting legends such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England together with Wales have been drawn in the same pool for the 2027 RWC, promising a major early clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw recalls their memorable meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at Twickenham contributed to the hosts' surprise early exit.

Key Group Draws

Ireland alongside Scotland also share a pool together, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, Ireland secured a convincing win, with their opponents unable to progress to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Portugal, who each impressed as surprise packages in the last World Cup, round out that Pool D.

Notably, the victors of these two groups are kept apart from defending champions and world number one South Africa until the final, presuming the Springboks win their own group.

Tournament Implications

If the pools play out according to the current global standings, other leading contenders like New Zealand and France would also be kept apart from both England and Ireland all the way to the final.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the other highly-seeded nation on the same half of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Tournament hosts Australia have been drawn together with their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Group A.

The Wallabies will kick off the tournament in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster match aimed at jump-start the event.

In other groups, reigning champions South Africa have drawn the Azzurri, Georgia and Romania. France are in a pool with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will take on the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the World Cup expands to twenty-four nations from the twenty who competed in France.

This edition will feature a round of 16 round for the first time in Rugby World Cup history.

Although the winner of Pool F may avoid some of the game's biggest beasts early on, they will have to face the second-placed team from Pool B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the other six group winners will play a team that finished third from the pool stages.
