Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that people who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying these drugs need to be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to starting mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
