Officials in the island state are attempting to pinpoint a magenta ooze that has surfaced on a isolated coast, with some scientists anxious it could be an algae outbreak.
The rosy-colored ooze appeared along a portion of Randalls Bay about 37 miles south of Hobart. A similar sludge has also been documented on areas of Little Roaring Beach and an additional coastal site.
Examples have been gathered and provided to the Environment Protection Authority for analysis. A spokesperson stated that "algae outbreaks are a natural occurrence in reaction to shifts in nutrients, heat, rainfall or illumination".
"These blooms are at times called red or pink tides because the proliferations can change the water crimson," the official added. "Not all algal blooms are harmful, with several kinds functioning as a major source of nourishment for creatures in the oceanic food chain."
